Croydon and District Regional Survey - Land Use Survey c. 1912 - 20

The Society's Regional Survey of Croydon and District Land Use Survey pre-dates the published 1st, 2nd, and 3rd National Land Use Surveys, and can be considered something of a pioneering achievement, although not completed as there were other priorities in the 1930s. The survey area covers parts of south London, NW Kent, and NE Surrey.

The Society's Library holds copies of six inches to the mile Ordnance Survey maps coloured to show the results of the land use survey in two forms:

'field slips' being western and eastern halves of O.S. 6 inches to the mile 'quarter sheets', folded in two, annotated with field observations of land use, and hand coloured (see Table below);
'fair copies' being full quarter sheets, hand coloured.

In some cases less than the whole area of each field slip or fair copy has been surveyed, and/or coloured. Occasionally there are added notes e.g. trees identified, 'sheepfold', geological observations, etc. Only one slip carries a dated annotation (1921).

There is some overlap, inevitably, between the Kent, London, and Surrey county sheet line sheets. Some slips are duplicated, being from different editions. Publication dates for the sheets used appear to range from 1897 to 1914, with two sheets which were published in 1920. A few sheets have no field data, and a few are coloured to show the geology.

The handwriting on the field slips could probably be identified - certainly that which is C.C. Fagg's, at any rate.

Of the, at least, 137 field slips called for, the following are not present (many of them relating to areas peripheral to the Society's Regional Survey Area may not in fact have been created or used): 1-9, 16-26, 34, 36-48, 55-64, 76-88, 96-104, 111-112, 116-124, and 130-132.

The field slips' margins have been cropped, so dating of the O.S. printing would have to be established by comparison with the Society's set of full quarter sheets.

London sheets The four parts of the London NE and London SE sheets are stamped 'Geological Survey, London, S.W.' on the reverse, and appear to be unused official Geological Survey field slips. They have not in fact been used for field recording of any sort.
