Memories of Norwood from 1852 to 1909

We are most grateful to member Steve Block for donating to our Library the typescript of Elizabeth Louisa Dee's Memories of Norwood. Although we did not have a record of this, it was easy to discover that the British Library has a copy of the published version. Details of the typescript and the printed booklet are given below.

The author, apparently born in or about 1835, describes the early days of Norwood's 'New Town', a walled estate of workmen's houses created to accommodate the workers re-erecting the Crystal Palace (of 1851) at Sydenham (where it re-opened in 1854.) The early (1852) plan of New Town (on the south side of Central Hill, between Oxford Road and Rockmount Road) is of especial interest, and family historians may find the numerous personal names and identified residences of interest.
