Madge Penry-Jones

Members will have been saddened to hear of the death of Marjorie Lilla PENRY-JONES née WICKS (17 January 1908 - 19 January 2003) who died in Croydon just two days after her 95th birthday. She and her late husband Jack joined the Society in 1959. Both served on the Society’s Council, Madge from 1971 to 1996 with two short breaks. She acted as our Secretary for Circulars with great efficiency for many years, dealing with room bookings for Section Secretaries and arranging the printing of the Circular (now renamed Programme). Jack (1897-1983) was our 49th President, 1970-1971, and author of two important papers in the Society’s Proceedings, describing the history and wildlife of Selsdon Wood in Croydon and High Elms, Bromley. Jack and Madge were enthusiastic supporters of the Society’s Ornithology Section but had wide interests including, in Madge’s case, industrial archaeology, especially that of canals.
